Regardless of your goals in the health sciences industry, there's something for everyone at SCC.
Become a competent technician to assist a pharmacist within their scope of practice and perform tasks including basic to extensive medication preparation, dosage calculations, compounding, IV admixture patient information maintenance, inventory and quality control. Students in a pharmacy lab and in local pharmacies build proficiency in pharmacy processes and procedures such as procuring, manipulating, and preparing drugs for dispensing.
SCC's Advanced-Level Pharmacy Technician program will prepare you for a career in retail pharmacies, hospitals, long-term care facilities and more.
Spartanburg Community College’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Program prepares students to enter the workforce in several productive and fulfilling settings such as hospitals, OB/GYN offices, vascular clinics and many more. A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is a skilled health professional within the Imaging Sciences field. Sonographers are proficient in anatomical knowledge, patient care, and interpersonal skills. Sonographers use ultrasound technology to create images of anatomy using sound waves. Sonography does not use radiation. Sonographers look at multiple anatomical systems, assist with procedures, and evaluate blood flow patterns. Sonography is sometimes referred to as ultrasound. The images taken by sonographers are used to aid doctors in diagnosis of diseases and abnormalities.
As an expanded duty dental assisting student, you'll develop skills to receive and prepare a patient for treatment, prepare dental instrument setups, and assist a licensed dentist in the treatment of patients. As an office manager, the dental assistant is a liaison between the dentist and patients. Students work in a simulated dental office in the fall and spring semesters on campus to gain clinical skills. Clinical experience is gained in all three terms by rotations in local dental offices.
Professional opportunities include chairside dental assistant, receptionist, oral surgery assistant, orthodontic assistant, pediatric dental assistant, endodontist assistant, periodontist assistant, and office manager.
EMS professionals are employed in areas such as emergency ambulances, private non-emergency ambulance transport services, hospitals, clinics, and other health care settings. Spartanburg Community College's EMS students consistently score well-above average on national certification exams and job placement is continuously near or at 100%.
Students in SCC's Medical Assisting program receive hands-on experience in a lab setting and complete clinical rotations in local physicians' offices. Many graduates have become employed within three months of completing the program.
The medical Assisting program is to prepare medical assistants who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.
The medical laboratory technician (MLT) performs a wide variety of routine and specialized diagnostic and screening procedures to provide the physician with accurate results. These results are used by the physician to diagnose, treat, and monitor patient progress. As medical investigators, medical laboratory technicians perform blood collection techniques, operate state-of-the-art instruments, and computers, and examine specimens under the microscope.
The MLT program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in a wide variety of healthcare laboratory settings. Upon graduation, students are eligible to take national certifying examinations, earning the designation Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Technician.

Entering the nursing profession does not have to take years, at SCC you can prepare to become an LPN in a few months. Upon completion of the LPN program, you'll be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
SCC's program in radiologic technology can prepare you for a career in hospitals, clinics, and specialized physician's offices. Radiologic technologists, also known as radiographers, perform medical exams using X-rays on patients to create images of specific parts of the body. The images are then interpreted by a doctor for diagnosis and monitoring of disease. With additional training and/or experience, radiographers may specialize in other modalities such as bone densitometry, mammography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and interventional radiology.
Want to help people with lung or breathing disorders? Respiratory therapists provide direct patient care, patient education, and care coordination. They practice in acute care facilities, long-term acute care facilities, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living centers, subacute care units, rehabilitation centers, diagnostic units, and in the home. Respiratory therapists use sophisticated medical equipment and perform complex therapeutic procedures and diagnostic studies and must possess an in-depth understanding of human physiology and apply that knowledge in the clinical setting.
Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings.
The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This individual works under the supervision of a surgeon to ensure that the operating room or environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
A surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Massage therapy is a proven healing method involving the manipulation of muscles and other soft tissue to increase blood and oxygen flow throughout the body to relieve pain, enhance function and encourage relaxation.
The Therapeutic Massage program at SCC focuses on Swedish and basic massage techniques while providing students with knowledge of anatomy, physiology and general wellness practices. You'll also learn business skills and ethical responsibilities needed to be successful health care providers in this diverse and fast-growing field.
As an SCC Chaser, you'll have a wealth of health programs available for you to choose from to start you on your career path, including ones that you can fully complete during your time here. If you're looking to take your education a step further, you even have the option to start your path in health sciences here and expand your degree at other institutions.
