Spartanburg Community College and Union County Schools Partner to Expand Mechatronics Opportunities for Students

UNION, SC — Spartanburg Community College (SCC) and Union County Schools have entered into a new articulation agreement designed to expand advanced manufacturing and workforce training opportunities for students through SCC’s Mechatronics program. The agreement creates a seamless pathway for Union County Career & Technology Center students to earn college credit while preparing for high-demand careers in automation, robotics, and advanced manufacturing.

The partnership allows eligible students who successfully complete the Mechatronics program at the Union County Career & Technology Center to receive articulated college credit toward SCC’s Mechatronics program, helping reduce the cost of higher education while accelerating students’ entry into the workforce.

“The partnership with Spartanburg Community College is very valuable to Union County Schools students and community. The support of SCC continues to provide opportunities and create pathways to success for our students. We are appreciative of SCC and the vision for our students,” said Joey Haney, Superintendent of Union County Schools.

“We are excited to partner with Spartanburg Community College to expand advanced manufacturing and workforce training opportunities for students in Union County,” said Dr. Randy Worthy, Director of Union County Career & Technology Center. “The upcoming Mechatronics program at Spartanburg Community College - Union represents an important investment in the future of our students and local industry. Through this partnership, students will gain hands-on technical skills, industry-relevant experience, and a direct pathway to high-demand careers in automation, robotics, and advanced manufacturing.”

“This new dual enrollment Mechatronics program is about giving students an opportunity to see what’s possible for their future,” said Nikki Burgess, Executive Director of Workforce Development at Spartanburg Community College. “Through this partnership, Spartanburg Community College is expanding opportunities for Union County students to gain real skills, experience advanced technology, and participate in hands-on learning that prepares them for today’s workforce. More importantly, it gives students the chance to build confidence, explore meaningful career pathways, and begin creating a future they can be proud of before they even graduate high school.”

“By aligning mechatronics education with local industry needs, we are supporting the long‑term vitality of the Union County community while creating real opportunities for students and a stronger talent pipeline for employers,” said Dr. Michael Mikota, President of Spartanburg Community College.

Under the agreement, students who complete Mechatronics 1, 2, 3, and 4 and meet established academic and technical competencies may earn articulated credit for several SCC Mechatronics courses, totaling 22 credit hours. Students will then transition directly into third-semester Mechatronics coursework at SCC aligned with their educational and career goals.

The partnership reflects both institutions’ shared commitment to workforce development, student success, and strengthening the future workforce in Union County and the surrounding region.
