Elevate Excellence - Logo

Have your heard about Chaser's College-to-Career Power Skills course, Elevate Excellence? SCC wants to empower student success not just while you attend classes, but in everything you do after graduation.

What qualifies you for the occupation you are working toward? What skills will you need to get that job? What skills will you need to be competitive in your field, to get that promotion, to be chosen over all the other candidates who have the same education and experience that you have on your resume?

Job Skills: Hard Skills, Soft Skills, and POWER SKILLS

What are hard skills? The easily measurable technical skills and knowledge needed for a given occupation that are usually gained through education, training, or on-the-job experience.

What are soft skills? The behaviors, practices, and abilities that are less easily measured, but sometimes as much or more important than hard skills relating to things like organization, character, communication, problem solving, teamwork, etc.

Employers today are looking for more than just the "hard skills" and "soft skills" associated with a position; they are looking for POWER SKILLS.

What are power skills? The soft skills that are directly related to the current needs of employers which empower an individual to be both prepared and competitive in today's job market. Essentially, power skills are soft skills, but they are fine-tuned specifically for what is needed to be an empowered job candidate and employee in today's world.

Elevate Excellence Students

Take your employability to the next level through Elevate Excellence! Elevate Excellence is a free, self-paced course offered to all SCC students through Career Services that includes a power skills course with modules in D2L combined with opportunities to practice and demonstrate these essential power skills through your classes, activities on campus, and participation in professional development with Career Services staff.

By participating in the Elevate Excellence program, you will learn what South Carolina surveyed employers reported as being the top Power Skills they look for in potential employees. For each of those power skills, you will learn why they are important and how to utilize those skills. You will be given opportunities to practice and demonstrate each of the skills in ways that are effective without being time-consuming.

Through the Elevate Excellence program, you have the opportunity to earn real credentials that you can provide to potential employers and display on your LinkedIn. If you complete the entire program, you will receive a Professional Values Distinction on your degree including a cord that you may wear at your graduation ceremony.

Students can choose to just work on individual credentials where they feel they need improvement, or they can complete all of the modules in the course and all of the requirements of the program in order to earn the Professional Values Distinction upon graduation.

Below are the requirements for the Professional Values Graduate Distinction and Elevate Excellence program completion:

  • A minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA on official end of program transcript
  • Successful completion of all modules in the Elevate Excellence course and receive Power Skills Certification
  • Participate in resume review and mock interview meetings with Career Services
