SPARTANBURG, SC — Spartanburg Community College (SCC) celebrated the opening of its new Cosmetology Program with an official ribbon cutting ceremony at the Tyger River Campus, marking a significant step forward in expanding career-focused education for students across the Upstate.

The newly renovated space features a modern salon-style clinic floor, dedicated instructional labs, and a welcoming reception area designed to mirror a professional environment. The facility provides students with an immersive, hands-on learning experience that prepares them for immediate entry into the beauty industry.

“Our new cosmetology program, housed in the revitalized Tyger River Campus, reflects how we continue to empower students with in-demand skills, state-of-the-art learning spaces, and the confidence to turn passion into profession. This is access, workforce readiness, and community investment brought to life.” said Dr. Michael Mikota, President of Spartanburg Community College.

SCC’s Cosmetology Program is designed to be completed in one year and offers comprehensive training in hair design, skin care, and nail technology. Students benefit from a curriculum that blends classroom instruction with real-world application, including working directly with clients in the College’s on-campus clinic. In addition, students earn industry-recognized credentials such as Barbicide® and OSHA certifications, reinforcing professional standards and safety practices.

The program is currently serving 36 students and has the capacity to enroll 20 new students each semester. Students also gain exposure to current industry trends through engagement with professional product lines, manufacturer-led training, and career-focused development opportunities.

“Our new Cosmetology School gives students an elevated, real-world space to learn, practice, and grow. From the design of the clinic to the technology in our classrooms, everything has been built to support student success and industry-ready training. The openings in our program support the growing demand for skilled beauty professionals across the region. Our students graduate ready to meet industry standards, serve clients with excellence, and build meaningful careers.” said Allison Brewer, Cosmetology Department Chair.

A group of college staff and community members stand in a hallway during a ribbon-cutting ceremony, smiling as two individuals hold scissors over a blue ribbon decorated with bows. White, blue, and green balloons frame the scene, and a welcome or program sign is displayed in the background.
The ribbon cutting represents SCC’s continued commitment to providing accessible, high-quality training programs that align with workforce needs and create pathways to sustainable careers.
