Union Community Foundation Awards $7,000 Grant to Spartanburg Community College to Support Workforce Development for Union County High School Seniors

Union County, S.C. — December 2, 2025 — The Union Community Foundation has awarded a $7,000 grant to Spartanburg Community College (SCC) to strengthen academic success and economic mobility for high school seniors in Union County. The funding will support 16 students as they enroll in a manufacturing course offering integrated workforce credentials, including OSHA 10 and forklift certification. Offered twice annually at the Union County High School (UCHS) Career and Technology Education (CATE) Center, the program will serve 32 students each year.

This investment expands access to SCC’s high-quality career exploration by providing industry-recognized credentials directly on campus, removing common barriers faced by students pursuing workforce training. The course also reinforces workforce development pathways in one of the county’s leading industries, helping seniors become both college- and career-ready.

“We are deeply grateful to the Union Community Foundation for this generous support,” said Dr. Michael Mikota, President of Spartanburg Community College.  “This grant helps our Chasers dream boldly, chase opportunity, and live their lives to their full potential as they uplift themselves, their families, and Union County.”

While the curriculum covers foundational manufacturing knowledge, a significant portion of the course is dedicated to career exploration and personal development. Many participating students are still determining their post-graduation plans, and the program is designed to guide them through this critical transition. Through activities such as résumé writing, completing college applications, sharpening interview skills, and practicing time and money management, students gain a clearer understanding of their strengths, challenges, and career opportunities.

“The Union Community Foundation is grateful to Spartanburg Community College and Union County Schools for their commitment in providing industry recognized credentialing and instruction to train the next generation of skilled workers in our community,” said Kathy J. Lancaster, Chair of the Union Community Foundation. “We are pleased to provide Rapid Resource Grant funds to support these programs as a critical investment in the future of our students, workforce, and local economy.”

In addition to technical instruction, the course emphasizes essential soft skills that increase students’ marketability across all sectors. By combining SCC’s hands-on training with future-focused skill building, the program prepares Union County seniors for meaningful employment and long-term success.
