Spartanburg Community College Earns National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Designation from the NSA
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — July 8, 2025 — Spartanburg Community College (SCC) has been officially designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) by the National Security Agency (NSA), a prestigious recognition that affirms the strength and rigor of SCC’s cybersecurity program.
The College’s Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Computer Technology Networking/Cybersecurity has been officially designated as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD)—a distinction that certifies the program meets the highest national standards in cybersecurity training and education.
“This is a transformative moment for SCC,” said Dr. Kenneth Gardner, Information Technology Instructor. “This designation is not just about our program — it’s a win for the entire campus, our students, and the broader community. It means our students can be confident that their education meets rigorous national security standards, and it creates pathways to high-demand careers in government, private industry, and beyond.”
SCC is proud to be one of only seven institutions in South Carolinato receive the CAE designation—and one of just six to earn the distinction specifically for Cyber Defense—underscoring the College’s commitment to preparing students for the demands of today’s cybersecurity workforce.
Benefits for SCC Students
The CAE-CD designation brings multiple advantages to students pursuing cybersecurity at SCC:
- National Recognition: Their education is endorsed by one of the most respected national security agencies in the country.
- Expanded Career Opportunities: Graduates are well-prepared for high-demand roles in cybersecurity across both the public and private sectors.
- Affordable Career Pathways: SCC provides an accessible, cost-effective route to enter one of today’s most critical and growing industries.
- Scholarship Access: Students may be eligible for competitive scholarships that support cybersecurity education and workforce development.
A Strategic Commitment to Cybersecurity Education
SCC plans to leverage this national recognition to expand its curriculum and deepen partnerships with local businesses, government agencies, and other colleges. SCC will also continue outreach efforts to educate students, faculty, and the community about the growing importance of cybersecurity.
