Spartanburg Community College will host the sixth annual Wonders of Writing Symposium on Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 pm at the college's Downtown Campus. The event features SC published authors Scott Gould and George Singleton at a master class for SCC students on Thursday morning as well as a public reading and reception that evening for students, faculty, staff and community residents. There is no charge to attend.
"Hosting local and regional writers on campus allows our students to interact with the authors and delve into questions about the literature as well as the process of writing and publishing," explains Dr. Jenny Williams, SCC's department chair of Humanities and Languages and WOW committee member. "We are proud of the exposure that such an event provides to our students and the community, and we welcome Mr. Gould and Mr. Singleton to SCC."
SCC English 102 students are reading Singleton's collection of stories, Staff Picks, and Gould's, Strangers to Temptation. Both authors reflect on the myriad of experiences felt by a cast of fictional characters, living, working and coming-of age in the South. As short story collections, these books offer multiple perspectives on themes like race, religion, and behavioral norms in Southern communities. The books also span nearly 50 years of Southern history, challenging readers to consider how the South has changed and how it has remained the same, throughout the decades. A reception, in which attendees can purchase books and mingle with the authors, will immediately follow the reading.
