The WOW Symposium public reading and reception will showcase two South Carolina authors, Scott Gould and George Singleton on Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m. at SCC's Downtown Campus. Community residents as well as SCC students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the event to learn from and interact with the authors. The symposium is free and open to the public.
SCC received the grant as part of Chapman Cultural Center's mission to provide cultural leadership for Greater Spartanburg by supporting local artists and non-profit organizations for various projects and programs in Spartanburg County. Awarded through the Community Grants Program, the funding is made possible in part by Chapman Cultural Center, its donors, the County and City of Spartanburg and the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the John and Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation of SC.
"This generous grant from Chapman Cultural Center will allow Spartanburg Community College to expand our marketing to reach a more diverse audience for our Wonders of Writing public reading" explained Jenny Williams, Ph.D., SCC department chair, Humanities and Languages. "WOW allows for an enriching and fruitful exchange between audience and authors. Through greater publicity within the community, this dynamic evening can touch larger numbers who will share in the conversation and educational experience."
The public reading will expose the Spartanburg community to two newly published books, Strangers to Temptation (Gould, 2017) and Staff Picks (Singleton, 2019). Both authors reflect on the myriad of experiences felt by a cast of fictional characters, living, working and coming-of age in the South. As short story collections, these books offer multiple perspectives on themes like race, religion and behavioral norms in Southern communities. The books also span nearly 50 years of Southern history, challenging readers to consider how the South has changed and how it has remained the same, throughout the decades. After the authors read excerpts from their new publications, the audience will be invited to ask questions.
A reception, in which attendees can purchase books and mingle with the authors, will immediately follow the reading.
