Spartanburg Community College will host the First Citizens Professional Speakers Series at the SCC Downtown Campus on Wednesday, March 6 featuring Jack McBride, owner and CEO of Contec, Inc. Designed to introduce students and community residents to local business professionals, McBride will share his experiences in co-founding and leading CONTEC. The event will be held from 12:00-1:00 pm in the Evans Academic Center auditorium at the Downtown Campus.
"We are excited to welcome Jack McBride as the fourth speaker in our series" explains Witney Fisher, executive director of the SCC Downtown Campus. "Since the School of Business relocated to the Downtown Campus in January 2017, we have continuously sought opportunities to strengthen business relationships and broaden professional experiences for our students through interactions with successful local professionals."
Contec is a manufacturer of wipes, pre-saturated wipes, disinfectants and mopping systems used in cleanroom environments and in healthcare. Starting from zero, the company has seen sales growth in 29 of the 30 years it has been in business and has become the global leader in critical cleaning products for the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device industries. The company is also a leader in supplying critical cleaning products to the compounding pharmacy, the microelectronics industry and the US OEM automotive paint industry.
The company currently employs over 700 employees (500 in Spartanburg) with two manufacturing locations in Spartanburg SC, one in Suzhou China, and one in Ashington, UK. Company sales offices are located in seven additional countries.
McBride received a bachelor's degree from Duke University in 1978 and a MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1980. He worked at Milliken for six years in various capacities before leaving and starting Contec in 1988 along with Jim Smith.
Over the years, Mr. McBride has been honored by many organizations for outstanding achievement, service and leadership. In 1998, he received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Upstate SC, and in 2000 he received the Dr. Charles Townsend Award for Individual Achievement as part of the Innovision Technology Awards sponsored by Deloitte and Touche. In 2013, McBride received the Alan R. Willis Society of Service Award recognizing individuals for unselfish community service and leadership that make a difference. That same year, McBride was recognized as one of SC's Ambassadors for Economic Development by then Gov. Nikki Haley.
Mr. McBride is active in the community and served for eight years as a trustee for the Mary Black Foundation, serving the last year as chairman. He also serves on the board of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Foundation and is a member of the task force for Economic Mobility in the south. In addition, Contec has received numerous awards for community service in Spartanburg community. McBride is married to Stacy and they have four children- John (24), Harry (22), Sally (20), Kate (18).
