SCC Early College Program
The Early College Program is an innovative partnership between Spartanburg Community College and the school districts across Spartanburg and Cherokee counties. This program was develped to graduate students with a high school diploma AND the first two years of transferable college credit or associte degree in preparation for high growth and high demand jobs. Early College students attend all four years of high school in a college setting. Spartanburg County Early College High School (SCECHS), Viking Early College, and Cherokee County Early College are all within the SCC Early College Program.
Meet Tatum
As a high school senior, Tatum Beck enrolled into the SCC dual enrollment program starting in the fall of 2017. Since then, Tatum has maintained a stellar collegiate GPA, served as a SCC Dual Enrollment Ambassador, and stayed active in the SCC community. Tatum decided to stay at SCC after high school and is looking to earn an Associate of Science degree before continuing her education further.

Early College courses are taught by SCC faculty – all of whom meet the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) credential requirements.Am I Eligible?
To be eligible for the Early College Program students must be at least 16 years of age and have completed their sophomore year in high school. Students must also meet individual course eligibility requirements based on one or more of the following multiple measures:- ACT minimum score of 22 in Math and 19 in English
- SAT (taken March 2016 or after) minimum score of 580 in Math and 510 in Evidence Based Reading and Writing
- Students with a weighted 3.0 High School GPA may place into dual enrollment courses without taking the College placement test with parental and school superintendent approval indicated on the SCC Early College Permission and Registration Form. Individual high schools and career/technology centers may adopt additional requirements for placing students in dual enrollment courses. Students should consult with their high school guidance counselor for more information on what their school requires.

Talk with your parents or guardian, and meet with a high school guidance counselor to see if Early College is right for you. Contact Early College staff at dualenrollment@sccsc.edu and request more information on the Early College Program or follow the steps to enrollment below.

Steps to Enroll in Early College Program

Visit SCC Admissions Center
Visit the SCC Admissions Center at any SCC campus location to discuss enrollment in the SCC Early College Program with an Early College Counselor.

Apply to Early College
Complete the following form(s) and return them to the SCC Admissions Center -
- 2021-2022 Early College Application
- SCC Admissions Appeal Form for Early College Admission - if you will not be 16 years old or a high school junior by the day classes begin.
There is no application fee for applying. You will need to consult with your high school or career center guidance counselor for approval to take dual credit classes and to obtain their signature on the application.

Submit Entrance Test Scores or Take Placement Assessment
Provide placement testing/assessment scores, ACT or SAT scores to determine eligibility for SCC classes. The placement skills assessments may be administered at your high school or career center. If not, visit the Admissions Center and complete the placement testing.

Confirm Acceptance, See Advisor & Register
Confirm your acceptance into the College by visiting or calling the SCC Admissions Center at any SCC location. Once accepted, the Early College Counselor will assist you with advising and registering for classes.

Pay Tuition & Fees
Follow up with the Financial Aid Office and the Business Office to confirm that your tuition and fees are paid.
Once tuition and fees are paid, obtain your parking decal at the Business Office, have your SCC student ID made in the Admissions Center, and purchase books for classes at The Book Inn.

Ashley McCollum: Getting a Head Start
Ashley McCollum learned about the SCC Early College program through her Dorman High
School counselor, Tiffany Sherbert, who recommended that Ashley begin to see what
college classes are all about. “I thought that dual enrollment would be a good fit
for me and I wanted to see what college was like," Ashely said. Ashley discussed the
opportunity with her parents and everyone agreed that not only could she do this,
they felt this would be a great chance for Ashley to become college ready. Ashley
says that she gained confidence after taking Political Science 201 and Economics 210
in the fall 2018 semester during which she got a taste of what it takes to be successful
on a college level. Ashley also expressed that her Macroeconomics class challenged
her in a good way, as she had to think from different perspectives in order to grasp
the principles. However, she stressed that she had to find study strategies, attend
study sessions with the instructor, and use other important college skills to master
the Macroeconomics course. “I am glad that Ashley had to learn how to work through
and find the answer for a challenging course like this," stated Ashley's mother.
"It taught her not to quit or give up, but rather find a way to get help and overcome
when a course gets tough.”
