Student Disability Services: The Student
In the Classroom
Each student is encouraged to talk with his or her instructor about the needed accommodation plan before the term begins, or as early as possible. This will allow the instructor ample time to assist the student with academic accommodations if necessary. Sometimes it is helpful to have a private meeting with the instructor to discuss how your disability will affect your academic performance. The student should also maintain contact with the counselor from Student Disability Services during the semester to ensure timely response if changes are necessary.
Meeting With The Disability Services Counselor
After documentation of disability is submitted, the student should contact the SDS counselor, who will meet with the student to discuss academic accommodations. The counselor and the student will jointly develop an accommodation plan and may request input from faculty regarding course requirements. Strict standards of confidentiality are maintained at all times. To arrange an appointment time, please Geraldine Brantley, Coordinator of Student Disability Services is located on the first floor of the Student Services Building in Suite 118. Our telephone number is number (864) 592-4818.
Documentation
Acceptable documentation for a student with a physical disability is a written statement from a physician, which includes a diagnosis and explanation of how this disability may affect the student's academic performance. For other disabilities, a recent psychological evaluation is required, along with an explanation of how the disability may affect academic performance. Recommended accommodations are also considered to ensure academic success.
