Student Disability Services: Frequently Asked Questions

Who are we?
Student Disability Services (SDS), is a gateway for qualified students with disabilities to receive services. We work with faculty, staff, administration and students to provide services that ensure access to educational opportunities for all students with disabilities.

Who is eligible for Student Disability Services?
Any currently enrolled students in degree and non-degree programs may register with Student Disability Services.

What documentation should I provide?
Acceptable documentation for a student with a physical disability is a written statement from a physician, which includes a diagnosis and explanation of how this disability may affect the student's academic performance. For other disabilities, a recent psychological evaluation is required, along with an explanation of how the disability may affect academic performance. Recommended accommodations are also considered to ensure academic success.

What do we do?
Student Disability Services can arrange academic accommodations for qualified students. We also offer support to faculty, staff and students in the implementation of accommodations.

I have ADHD. What services are available to me?
The services provided by SDS are on an individualized basis. Academic accommodations will be provided based upon the student's unique needs.

Does SDS provide tutoring?
No, SDS does not provide tutoring. You may see the instructor of the class if you are having difficulty for a tutoring referral. On- campus tutoring is also available in the Tutorial Learning Center (TLC) in Room E-2 in the East Building or through the Success Network in room 172 of the Student Services building.

How do I receive accommodations?
The student is responsible for providing appropriate documentation to the SDS counselor. Once the accommodations are determined, the student must request these accommodations each semester. The need for accommodations MUST be communicated to the SDS counselor each term.

I have a medical condition. Do I qualify for an accommodation?
If you have a condition which results in a functional limitation and you have the appropriate documentation, you are eligible.

Does Spartanburg Community College provide all interpreting services?
Yes. Spartanburg Community College and the Cooperative Program for the Deaf and the Blind provides all interpreting services provided for deaf and hard of hearing students in credit, non-credit and continuing education programs.

How do I request an interpreter?
To request an interpreter, you must contact the Coordinator for the Cooperative Program with the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind in Suite 112, office 114 in the Student Services building, and complete a request form before the beginning of each semester. Phone 864-592-4746 or e-mail dayb@sccsc.edu.

Do I have to request an accommodation each semester?
Yes. In order to receive an accommodation, you must meet with a SDS counselor prior to each semester beginning. Accommodations will not just be assumed, but must be requested each semester.

If I register with SDS, who will have access to my records?
The staff of SDS will have access to your documentation, but your disability records are not part of your transcripts and are completely confidential.

Does Spartanburg Community College have scholarships for students with disabilities?
No. SCC does not have scholarships specifically for students with disabilities.

Will I have consideration for absences and tardies?
Attendance and punctuality are extremely important. This accommodation only applies if you miss class for disability related reasons. You are responsible for contacting your instructor for any missed work.
