Career Planning & Placement Services Interview and Job Search Hints

Getting a job requires a consistent and dedicated effort. The harder you work at it, the better your chances are of being successful. The first step is to prepare a marketable resume that demonstrates your personal skills and qualifications for the job. Then you will need to spend time preparing for the job search and interview.

Interviewing is a learned skill. The more you know about yourself and the more you prepare for the interview, the more successful you will be with your job search.

Preparing for the Job Search
  • Spend time ANALYZING YOUR SKILLS
  • NETWORK! NETWORK! NETWORK!
  • SPEND adequate TIME on your job search
  • Utilize ALL AVAILABLE RESOURCES for your job search
  • Become familiar and comfortable with ONLINE APPLICATION PROCEDURES
  • Keep an ELECTRONIC COPY OF YOUR RESUME with you at all times
  • Set SPECIFIC/ATTAINABLE GOALS and TIMETABLES
  • GET ORGANIZED
  • FOLLOW-UP on all LEADS
  • MAINTAIN YOUR JOB SEARCH EFFORTS


Preparing for the Interview
  • KNOW YOURSELF and how to relate your personal skills and qualifications to the
    employer’s expectations and needs
  • PREPARE ANSWERS to typically asked questions
  • REVIEW YOUR RESUME to ensure that all information is current; take a copy to the interview.
  • Prepare your LIST OF REFERENCES and take a copy to the interview
  • CONTACT INDIVIDUALS who are listed as references to notify them of your
    interview
  • RESEARCH THE COMPANY - DON’T OVERLOOK A COMPANY just because
    you feel they have nothing to offer. Most companies have diverse needs.
  • Prepare to DRESS FOR SUCCESS
  • PLAN for your TRAVEL on the day of the interview – know where you are going and how long it will take you to get there; have your car in good working order; and ensure that you have the employer’s contact information readily available in case of an emergency

At the Interview
  • Arrive ON TIME for the interview – at least 15 minutes early
  • Present a PROFESSIONAL APPEARANCE/ATTITUDE
  • SHAKE HANDS firmly upon introducing yourself
  • SPEAK CLEARLY and CONCISELY
  • LISTEN CAREFULLY TO THE QUESTIONS BEING ASKED
  • Maintain EYE CONTACT with the interviewer(s)
  • AVOID DISTRACTING MANNERISMS
  • Show INTEREST and ENTHUSIASM
  • Be prepared to ASK QUESTIONS
 
After the Interview
  • ANALYZE THE INTERVIEW- ask yourself how well you answered the questions and how well you demonstrated your skills
  • WRITE a THANK YOU LETTER to the interviewer(s) within 24-48 hours after the interview. Be sure to reference something specific that was discussed in the interview. Also take this opportunity to reiterate your interest in and your qualifications for the position.
  • FOLLOW-UP if it is alright to contact the employer
  • BE PREPARED FOR THE JOB OFFER!!
