      SCC Downtown Campus Initiative


      Our community's hub for connecting people with education and jobs

      In the summer of 2009, SCC announced plans for a presence in downtown Spartanburg, utilizing the historic Evans Building on South Dean Street. The vision for a downtown campus is to develop an educational hub for those who live, work and play in downtown Spartanburg, to respond to the Spartanburg County 40/30 Challenge to increase higher education attainment of citizens of all ages and to create a Workforce Development Center to meet the needs of underemployed and unemployed citizens.

      Community Needs
      • 39,673 people live within the city limits
      • 30% are under 18 years of age
      • 18.7% are between the ages of 18 - 29
      • 27.5% of those over 25 years of age do not have a high school diploma 
      • 44.5% have household incomes under $25,000
      • 23.3% live at or below the poverty level 
      • 25.6 % September 2009 unemployment rate

      SCC Access and Success
      • 24.3% enrollment increase from fall 2008 to fall 2009
      • 96% of 2008 SCC graduates are working or continuing on for baccalaureate programs 
      • More than 80 programs of study available 
      • More than 8,000 people served annually through non-credit, continuing education classes
