Best Start: Earn College Credit
While Still in High School

The Best Start Program is a dual credit program at SCC that lets high school students earn both high school and college credit at the same time.

With the Best Start Program you can...

  • Find out what college is like before graduating from high school...

  • Get a head start on college classes...

  • Get college experience while still in high school...

  • Save money on college tuition by graduating quicker.

Learn from college instructors.
All Best Start courses are taught by SCC faculty – all of whom meet the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) credential requirements.

Am I eligible?
To be eligible for the Best Start Program students must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age and have completed their sophomore year in high school.

  • Meet the minimum score on placement tests for curriculum courses at SCC or SAT/ACT scores that meet the minimum college requirement.

  • Complete and submit SCC’s BSP Application and Permission Form for Early Admission. Download: Best Start Program Student Guide (PDF) and Best Start Program Application (PDF).

How can I enroll in the Best Start Program?

  • Talk with your parents or guardian about SCC’s Best Start Program.

  • Meet with a high school guidance counselor to see if Best Start is right for you.

  • Contact SCC Admissions and request more information on the Best Start Program.

What if my grades aren't quite good enough... I've dropped out,
or I'm thinking about it? Thanks to a grant funded by the Wal-Mart Foundation, we offer Gateway to College, an incredible opportunity to get back on track if you are considering dropping out or have already dropped out of high school. By joining a positive learning community, you will be surrounded by support and resources you need to turn things around and start college.

Credits earned before high school graduation do not count against semester limits for the LIFE scholarship. Receipt of Lottery Tuition Assistance may affect eligibility for the Academic Competitiveness.
