Becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at SCC

Do you like helping people? Do you want a fast‐paced, exciting career that is as rewarding as it is challenging? As an EMT, you may respond to many emergency calls for help on a daily basis – heart attacks, automobile collisions, difficulty breathing, gunshot wounds, strokes, stabbings, seizures, falls and much more!

Prerequisites
  • Prerequisites are set by SC DHEC – EMS Division. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED and meet entrance requirements and prerequisites of the college. 

You will learn:
  • Medical/Legal/Ethical Issues, Physical & Mental Well‐Being, Obtaining Vital Signs 
  • Airway Management, Oxygen Administration, Airway Devices 
  • CPR, AED Operation 
  • Scene Assessment, Patient Assessment, Physical Examination, Taking a Medical History 
  • General Pharmacology 
  • Medical Emergencies: Heart Attack, Respiratory Distress, Altered Mental Status, Seizures, Strokes, Diabetics, Environmental, Behavioral, Poisoning/Overdose 
  • Trauma Care to include Bleeding Control, Wound Care, Shock Management, Splinting Fractures, Immobilization of Joints, Care for Victims of Motor Vehicle Collisions, Head & Spine Injuries, IV Maintenance, Lifting and Moving Patients 
  • Obstetrics, Childbirth, Infants and Children, Geriatrics 
  • Ambulance Operations to include Communications, Documentation, Confined Space Access, Infection Control, HAZMAT, (Hazardous Materials), Weapons of Mass Destruction, Terrorism, Mass Casualty Incidents 

Other Information
  • EMS 105 and EMS 106 are two consecutive parts (courses) totaling 216 classroom/lab hours.
  • EMS 105 and EMS 106 are part of the one-semester EMT Certificate program that includes co-requisite courses of AHS 101, Introduction to Healthcare Professions; AHS 102, Medical Terminology; and AHS 104, Medical Vocabulary/Anatomy. 
  • 24 hours Internship will be spent on a 911 ambulance responding to real emergencies.
  • Other fees are associated with this and other Health and Human Services programs.

Results Achieved
  • Upon successful completion of this program, the student will be eligible to challenge the National Registry of EMTs practical and written certification examinations after just one semester! Certification = eligibility for employment! 
    • Application to the National Registry requires self‐disclosure of any felony convictions which may or may not prevent a candidate from becoming a nationally registered EMT. 
  • Ability to recognize a variety of illnesses and injuries and, provide treatment and care efficiently and effectively. 
  • Entry level course to Advanced EMT, Paramedic, EMS Dispatcher.
