EDUCATION 230, SCHOOLS IN COMMUNITIES, (4 credit hours)
Education 230, Schools in Communities will transfer to Upstate as SEDF 210, Foundations of Education.
This course will introduce students to the requirements of a teaching career. Students will explore the pros and cons of the teaching profession to decide if it is their best choice.
Students who pass a SLED check will participate in several classroom observations. SCC has made arrangements with local school districts for these observations. Principals are working with SCC to place students in classrooms with excellent teachers. After the visits, a report will be required discussing teaching philosophies and techniques observed.
Students will volunteer with one of several community service projects. After school programs, tutoring programs and other community projects will be required. The student will have some flexibility in choosing the program that best suits their interests.
Students will attend a School Board meeting. Policy and budget decisions will be discussed in the follow-up report.
Dr. Charles Love, Dean of the School of Education at The University of South Carolina, Upstate, plans to visit this class to make the transition to Upstate easier for SCC students.
Students will sign a 2+2 Agreement to insure current catalog requirements.
Mrs. Sylvia Murray will teach this course. Mrs. Murray also teaches this course at USC Upstate. She has many years of experience in teaching and administration in the Spartanburg Public Schools.
Any student planning an Early Childhood, Elementary Education or Middle Grades major at USC Upstate should enroll in this course. Many Secondary Education Majors also need this course.
