Use the IRS Data Retrieval Option When You Complete Your FAFSA

Begining February 1, 2012, students and parents who have submitted their 2011 IRS tax return will be able to select the IRS Data Retrieval option to transfer tax information to the 2012-2013 FAFSA. We strongly encourage you to select this option when you complete your FAFSA online.

Advantages:
  • By using the IRS Data Retrieval Option, you significantly lower the chances you are selected for verification which will save you time and expedite the application process.
  • If your FAFSA is selected for verification and you used the IRS Data Retrieval Option, you will not be required to submit any tax return documentation.

You’re Selected for Verification and Do Not Want to Get a Tax Transcript from the IRS
If you are being asked to submit a Tax Transcript for you and/or your spouse (if married) or parents (if dependent), you can request a Tax Transcript from the IRS (see below) or you can make a correction to your 2012-2013 FAFSA and use the IRS Data Retrieval Option. The financial aid office will receive the corrected application and if you made no change to the IRS data, you will not need to submit a Tax Transcript.

Obtaining a Tax Transcript from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
If your FAFSA is selected for verification and you chose not to use the IRS Data Retrieval Option or could not use it, you will be required to get a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS. Personal copies of tax returns can no longer be accepted.
For additional information about obtaining a Tax Transcript, click here.

Please note: The financial aid office will not accept a Tax Transcript faxed or emailed from the IRS.

Obtaining Documentation from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) That a Tax Return Was Not Filed

If your FAFSA is selected for verification and you and/or your spouse (if married) or parents (if dependent), did not and was not required to file a federal tax return, you will be required to get a Verification of Nonfiling letter from the IRS.
For additional information about obtaining a Verification of Nonfiling letter, click here.

Please note: The financial aid office will not accept a Verification of Nonfiling letter faxed or emailed from the IRS.

Steps to Apply
  • Complete and file your federal income tax return. You can then use the IRS Data Retrieval Option to transfer tax information to your FAFSA. By using the IRS Data Retrieval Option, you significantly lower the chances you are selected for verification which will save you time and expedite the application process.
  • Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online using FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.gov. The FAFSA must be completed once per year between January and May for the following school year.  The school year consists of the fall semester (begins in August), the spring semester (begins in January) and the following summer semester (begins in May).
  • You and your parent (if dependent) should apply for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov prior to starting FAFSA on the Web so that you can sign electronically and use the IRS Data Retrieval Option.  After obtaining a PIN, it can be used every year.
  • SCC's Title IV school code is 003994.
  • You do not have to wait for your financial aid award before continuing with your testing, advisement and registration processes.  However, to be awarded financial aid you must be admitted to the College.  Contact the SCC admissions center.
  • Be admitted to the College and complete your financial aid file by the May 1 priority deadline to be considered for all financial aid funds available.
  • For additional information see How and When Do I Apply?
  • Communication with Students- The majority of communications from the financial aid office will be sent to your SCC email account.  You must review your email and announcements regularly through the SCC Portal to ensure you have the latest information about your financial aid status.
